Scott Tady - Beaver County Times
Thirty years after cracking the Billboard Top-40 with a disco-pop
tune, Robert Peckman has released his first solo CD, “Stirrin’
Up Bees.” Peckman, formerly of New Brighton, said his horn-
infused, Memphis blues disc is getting spins from Internet blues
stations like
bluescritic.com and bluesdeluxe.com, and Pittsburgh’s
own WYEP-FM (91.3).
Peckman penned all 14 of the disc’s songs, which have a
straightforward, engaging lyricism. He’s the kind of guy who can
get away with rhyming “horns waggled” with “mind boggled” in
a love song, then turn around and make you smile with his
analogy for trying to woo a frigid woman (“It’s like stirrin’ up
bees without getting any honey.”) Peckman, now of Avalon,
gets philosophical on another song, noting that if a man stands
for nothing, then he will fall for anything.
A Mon Valley blues label, Bonedog Records, released “Stirrin’
Up Blues.” Label chief Jeffrey Ingersoll managed to coax Stax
recording artist Johnny Daye out of retirement to sing on two
songs. “He was a little reluctant,” Peckman said. “He told me
he hadn’t been in a studio in more than 30 years and I said, so
what, let’s just have some fun.”
That was Peckman’s attitude all along, having put out this disc
from songs he had written over a 42-year singing career that
began with the Skyliners. He joined Beaver County’s
chart-topping Jaggerz in 1970, then while living above a New
Brighton recording studio in 1977 began working with Don
Garvin on a pop project that led to a short-lived band called
simply Q. In the spring of 1977, Q spent seven weeks on the
Billboard chart, peaking at No. 23 with a single, “Dancin’ Man.”
Sirius and XM satellite radio have rediscovered “Dancin’ Man,”
judging by the royalty checks Peckman gets every few months.
“They used to be for like $18 or $30, but now they’re up in the
hundreds,” Peckman said. “So it must be in regular rotation.”
